What is the 4th Grade Orchestra Program?
District 67 has a great program offered during the school day for 4th grade students. Students may take lessons on an orchestra instrument in small groups. Lessons are 30 minutes once a week and rotate through the day so that they do not miss the same class every week.
Students learn how to play their instrument as well as explore different types of music. They also learn those habits of mind needed in instrument study that transfer to other types of academic situations.
Musicians perform in the Winter Show, The Spring Sing and also in a district wide orchestra concert. These students also gain a foundation for middle school orchestra and are happily playing music in the 5th grade orchestra at DPM.

How does my child get an instrument?
Parents can purchase and instrument or rent one from a local music store. Stores generally charge between 20 and 60 dollars a month, depending on the store and the instrument. District 67 partners with a few stores that actually deliver to the school, will come to the school to repair or pick up the instrument at the end of rental. After filling out the registration form, check out the "Renting an Instrument" page of this site for renting information.

Can my child take an instrument if they are already playing piano (voice, guitar, harp)
Students who already take an instrument have the foundational skills to succeed on a second instrument. If they are already practicing 45 minutes a day, they do not need to add another 45 minutes for their second instrument. They will do fine with only a consistent few minutes a day. It works very well!
What instruments may my child learn in 4th grade?
In the orchestra program, we teach Violin, Viola, Cello and Bass.
