What does my child need for lessons in September?
Your musician will need a few things for their orchestra experience. The good news is that you can get all of the items at one place. The better news is that we have 2 stores that actually deliver to the school and come to DPM throughout the year to service all of your instrumental needs.
What to order...
An instrument--you know what the instrument is that you registered for...violin, viola, cello or bass
A Book--We are using Essential Elements 2000 (for the instrument your child is playing) This book is yours to keep.
A Stand--Every student needs a music stand for at home practice. Their posture suffers if they do not have one. This stand is also yours to keep.
Specific instructions for additional items for each instrument are listed below...

Violin players...
If your child is average height, order a half size instrument. If they are petite, (really petite) order a quarter size and if they are taller (REALLY taller), order a 3/4 size.
Violin students also need a shoulder rest. Just a "sponge" is fine at this time. The sponge the store will sell you is a special shaped and is what we use--not a kitchen sponge.

Viola players...
Viola's are sized differently. most 4th graders start on a 13 inch viola. That does not mean that the viola is only 13 inches long. I don't know where they got the sizing. I just go with it.
Viola players need a shoulder rest. For this year, purchasing a "shoulder sponge" from the music store is fine enough. Students do not use kitchen sponges.

Cello players...
If your child is average height, a half size cello works well. If your student is very petite, they will need a quarter size.
Cello players need a rock stop. This goes on the floor and the end pin goes into it. All cellos should come with a rock stop.

Bass
If your student is average height or shorter, you will order an eighth size. If there is a question about whether your child needs a quarter size bass, please email me at [email protected].
Bass players need a rock stop. It should come standard in your rental.
Bass players need "Pops" brand rosin or the equivalent. I will not allow the rosin in a wood block. It just does not work well for Bass.

Where to order...
There are many fine music stores in this area as well as Chicago. Several students rent or purchase from other places...Please do not purchase from stores where you would also buy groceries or sporting goods. Ebay is a wonderful place, but if it is inexpensive, there is probably a reason. 9 times out of 10, the student has to get a different instrument because the one they got was unplayable.
We have three stores that work with us here at Lake Forest. You do not need to travel to their building. They service all your needs here, in town. Both are fine. Ask questions about what the contract states and inquire about what the insurance covers.
